Spice Ornaments

  • 1 pound jar unsweetened applesauce, or make your own
  • 6 oz cinnamon, powdered
  • 4 oz clove, powdered
  • 4 oz ginger, powdered
  • 4 oz allspice, powdered
  • 2 oz fennel, powdered
  • 4 oz nutmeg, powdered
  • Vanilla beans
  • Whole cloves, star anise
  • Assorted cookie cutters
  • Wax paper

Mix as much of the powdered herbs into the applesauce to make a workable dough. Sprinkle powdered spice, any kind, onto wax paper. Using more spice like flour, roll out the dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.

Put shapes on cookie sheets sprinked with more spice and place in unheated oven to dry. When fairly dry and firm, but not hard, decorate with cloves and anise. The wafers can also be painted on one side with a thick acrylic paint. (If you paint both sides, you’ll lose the scent). Pierce each one through with toothpick so that a string can be inserted and they can be hung on wreathes and the Yule tree.

You can float the unpainted wafers in a punch bowl filled with hot cider. These make great bathroom and car deoderizers.
