Ma'at wears a feather in her headdress. She carries scales in her hand that weigh a soul against the weight of a feather. She guards the gates to the afterlife. If your soul is heavier than the feather, you have to go back and do it again. Ma’at is the ultimate judge and decision maker, and no other Deites have power over her.
Ma’at evolved into the "Eye of Horus". The Egyptians were afraid to mention Her by name. She stood just behind Horus. The phrase "the Eye of Horus is watching you" meant “behave yourself.” Ma’at survives in the symbol of the Egyptian Eye, and Her sacred plant is Horehound, also known as Eye of Horus. The Egyptians used Horehound for divination in much the same way as the I Ching uses yarrow stalks. We’ve lost ancient Egypt’s Horehound divination method. I'm sure someone will invent a new way to use it for divining. Possibly throwing the seed pods at a Velcro™ Ouiji board would work.
Lilith was the first woman, created at the same time as Adam. Adam wanted to dominate her sexually. Lilith told him he might be able to dominate the animals, but she had been created at the same time and of the same substance, and was his equal. She then shouted G-d’s sacred name, and disappeared from the garden and into the desert. Adam stormed off and complained to YHVH who ordered Lilith to return and behave herself. But she transformed herself into a dark and powerful winged Goddess, and gave birth to the thousands of creatures of the desert, scorpions, snakes, centipedes, who protect her from the warrior angels of YHVH . Once you peel off the layers of demonizing, there is the First Woman, uppity and opinionated and very independent.
Finally YHVH gave up, put Adam to sleep, and made Eve. When Lilith saw Eve was naively allowing herself to be used, She came to Eve in the aspect of Snake (Wisdom). Lilith told Eve that there was no good reason preventing her from achieving full consciousness. After all, YHVH did not tell her to avoid eating the fruit. That command was given only to Adam. Eve ate the fruit, and offered it to Adam. Adam took a bite. When YHVH found out he was furious. Adam blamed it all on Eve, taking no responsibility whatsoever (the Devil made him do it?). YHVH threw them both out of the garden.
Lilith, usually represented with wings and talons, surrounded by scorpions, and reptiles, is a power source of victimized women. I call upon Lilith for the tanglefoot spell to catch men who abuse and rape. I consider her the Goddess of “Just Say No."
