Gardening Tips.
- All the plants like sun. They don't need it for 8 hours, but for at least a few hours a day.
They tolerate different degrees of heat and cold, so check on the package directions.
- I have a black thumb. I always expect to lose about 25% of everything I plant. It doesn't always happen, but when I expect it to, it doesn’t feel as bad when it does. Still, as an herbalist and a witch, gardening fascinates me. I am especially enchanted by the concept of “farming by the signs”. It just seems to make such sense.
- I think that the ancients assigned constellations to certain elements because when the moon is in a particular place in the sky, its gravity and magnetism affects the behavior of energies on earth. This leans them toward certain accomplishments.
You can find this information in almost any almanac, from the Farmers’ to the Witches’. If you plan a garden with your child, you can make up a calendar together to plan when to plant, when to weed, when to harvest and when to let lie fallow.
On the other hand, if I’m angry, I like to pull weeds, prune and dig; if I'm feeling serene, I like to pot things, seed new plants and take cuttings. If I'm feeling adventurous, I like to wild craft, harvest and shop. If you get the urge to do something off schedule, the most important thing is to enjoy yourselves.
